Part I: Finding the Market

Market research can really sap the time out of a day. When searching out a niche market, I use to find myself really struggling to stay on topic. That’s where I really got into money troubles fast.

To start your market research, I would head on over to the world famous marketing hot spot on the internet and that is eBay. eBay can cause you to lose hours and hours searching from product to product trying to find something that is selling like crazy.

Market Research – “What’s Hot”

When I started my market research, I didn’t know that eBay produces a free listing of all the hot sellers every month. This really helped in my market research. The list is called; “What’s Hot” and you can find it really quickly by going to the sitemap and scroll down to the selling resources category.

In the selling resources category, at the bottom of the list is a link to “What’s Hot”. Next page will be a list of different resources, click on the “Hot Items by Category”. This will open up an eBook that covers all the items that are Hot…Very Hot…Super Hot! This is where you’ll discover which categories and products are on fire! This is market research on steroids! Have at it; just don’t spend too much time searching. Pick something and then move on to the next part of your market research.

Market Research – The Marketplace Research System

Once you can afford it, I highly suggest you getting involved with the marketplace research system. It cost a little, but I have found it to be really profitable as well as quickening my market research.

Check it out at the Marketplace Research Overview.

I won’t go into too much detail with your market research on eBay because you can read all about it at the link above. Anyway, once I check out eBay, I’ll sometimes do market research on Amazon to see if there are any printed books on my niche market. I usually like to see a listing of around 50-100 books written on my topics. That gives me a good indication as to the market and whether people are spending money within my new niche.

Market Research – Keywords & What Number Is Right?

Now it’s time to do a keyword search to see approximately how many people are actually in the market I’m researching. A great number for this is about 2,000 which allow my articles to make it to the first page on most of the search engines.

Market Research – The Samurai!

All I use to use was Overture’s Inventory keyword search. Nowadays, I use a program called Market Samurai. If you cannot afford it, then do your market research while you do keyword research with Google’s keyword search tool.

***ADDITIONAL NOTE***

Market Samurai has some really cool features. You can download a 40 day trial(at the time of this writing) and give it a shot. The program can be used on Mac’s as well as Windows. Not many programs do that these days. I do believe it will be only a matter of time before all Internet marketer’s will be doing the same.

Download the Market Samurai today; they have tons of tutorial videos to help you understand the program. Give it a half hour and you’ll be well on your way. It’s a niche marketer’s dream tool!

***END ADDITIONAL NOTE***

Once I go through the list of keywords in my market research and find one that I’m okay with, I move into the spying stage. This is the other part of marketing that got me in a little trouble. I also wasted a lot of time reading salescopy from the competition.

Market Research – Google’s Free Search Results…

For an idea of the content being written about the new Niche, click on the free side of Google’s search engine. That’s the left hand side for those of you who are brand new at this.

If you’re searching on a keyword that has traffic ranging from 1,000 – 2,000, then you should find articles from the top article directories displaying an article written by an article marketer.

This is great news if you find one. Competition is always a good thing. That usually means that there is money to be made in that niche. You can be pretty sure at this point of finding a great niche to work in.

Market Research – But Your Not Done Yet…

You now need to go through the paid section to see if there is anything going on within the electronic book department. Now, if you’re selling products, check to see the who, what, when and where of some of the people paying to advertise within your niche.

You can usually tell what’s hot in the product industry by seeing what there primary ad is referring too. If it is a general ad, move on to the next one until you find one that is a little more specific to a product. Maybe you can possibly market this product as well. Look to see if they have an affiliate program.

Market Research – Nope! Still Not Done – Check The Forums!

Don’t finish your market research here though; there is still one more place you need to go to ensure you have a good market. The place I’m referring to is the forums. The forums are where you can find out what your competition is lacking in delivering to there customers.

Finding a forum on your particular niche is fairly simple. For the most part, all you have to do is go to Google, type in your niche keyword followed by the word forum.

I do believe there is a forum for everything on the net. I have yet to find a niche I’m wanting to work in that does not have a forum.

In the forum, take a look around at some of the question’s being asked. Most forums have a Q&A sections. These are absolute goldmines!

See what people are talking about. If there is a discussion that is heated or seems to be very passionate, you may have found yourself a winner. It’s been my experience so far that there is always a hot topic that I can profit from.

Once you’re satisfied with you’re research, it’s time to get busy with building your Virtual Piece of Real Estate…
