Education Article Debate – Only The Educated Are Truly Free!

What exactly is education is a debate that seems to have been going on for as long as humankind itself. The ancient Greek philosopher, Epictetus once said nearly 2000 years ago “Only those people who are educated are truly free.” What does a statement like this mean? What does being “free” mean in this context? Well, first of all, Epictetus himself was born into a slave family. He and his ancestors were doomed to live a sub-standard life, while serving others. At some point of time in his life he realized his passion for philosophy and somehow managed to get permission to learn it, (slaves were not allowed intellectual pursuits in those days.)

Education – Who Never Missed An Opportunity?
Epictetus taught himself to read and write, and never missed an opportunity to hear lectures of the leading philosophers and scientists of his day. The result of all this was that he not only got his personal freedom from slavery, he even went on to found a school for philosophy. The life of Epictetus in a way parallels the life of many people in the world today. This is not to say that there are people who are born into slavery in the classical sense. It simply means that if a person does not get the necessary education, humans will be bound by their inevitable ignorance.
Education – Start At An Early Age!
Ideally, education should start at a young age. However, this does not mean that if a person did not get the chance to attend school and college, they should not try to get educated. It is never too late to start, because unfortunately not everyone in the world is fortunate enough to get even basic education. The whole purpose of education is to encourage people to think freely, and not be bound by dogma. This is what Epictetus meant by education makes people free. Education should never be confused with prosthelytizing or indoctrination. Education is in fact the opposite of these two.
Education Controversy…
This is perhaps where the controversy is raging as far as modern education is concerned. Being educated does not just mean getting a piece of paper that says you have completed a certain course. It means being able to distinguish from right and wrong, and also making the right decision when a person arrives at a dilemma. Being educated means being told the truth of the matter, not something the person wants to hear. The problem many people see with modern education is that it is indoctrination that is going on, rather than teaching what needs to be taught.
Education – Learn What You’ve Forgotten!
Someone once jokingly said that “being educated means remembering what you learnt in school, once you have forgotten everything.” Even though this was said as a joke, there is some truth in it. The point is, an educated person should be able to distinguish between real knowledge and an opinion. This does not mean that telling ones opinion on something is wrong. After all, knowledge has to start from somewhere. Even in science we can see that there are theories which are not cast in stone. The bottom line is that having education means always keeping an open mind, and always questioning the answers.
